This camp focuses primarily on the beauty of mathematics. Students will create artwork using mathematical ideas such as perspective drawings, proportion and tessellations. They will investigate why some shapes tile a plane and why some do not (angle properties). They will learn about geometric construction, graph theory and platonic solids. Through game, they will investigate the “Four Colour Theorem”, a surprising result in mathematics that states that any map can be coloured using only 4 colours so that no two countries sharing a borderline will have to be coloured using the same colour. They will simulate the Seven Bridges of Konigsberg problem and construct their own hexaflexagons.
Math with Art camp is from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm, and Math with Nature camp is from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. For students who register for both morning and afternoon sessions, the 1 hour lunch period is supervised and includes math games. Students must bring their own lunch. Students who enroll in both morning and afternoon sessions get a discount on the second session.
